The title of this book is deliberately ambiguous, for the work has something to offer both beginners and experts. The beginner will find a simple introduction to the chess problem, in the form of a detailed analysis of a small number of outstanding examples, followed by a survey, arranged alphabetically, of the principal terms and themes which he is likely to encounter as his acquaintance with chess problems grows deeper. For the expert the book presents a catalog of the terminology combined with a collection of some of the finest problems ever composed, and therefore makes a unique contribution to problem literature.
